Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy

  • This is the main temple in Sri Lanka, founded in 1595.
  • The temple is part of the royal palace complex.
  • The tooth has been kept in Kandy since the city was declared the capital in 1592. The tooth was in India for a long time, until it was moved to the island of ‘Ceylon’ in 371. At first, the shrine was in the city of ‘Apuradapura’, then in the city of ‘Polonnaruwa’ and eventually ended up in the city of Kandy.

Golden and Cave Temples of Dambulla

  • These are Buddhist cave temples from the 1st century BC, carved into the rock, with numerous statues of Buddha.
  • The Stone Temple of the Sleeping Buddha is the largest cave temple in South Asia. There are 5 main caves in the temple. In different caves, 153 statues of Buddha, 3 statues of the Kings of Sri Lanka, 4 statues of Gods and Goddesses, as well as wall Buddhist paintings with a total area of 2,100 sq. m. have been preserved.
  • Of the 153 statues, 73 statues are covered with gold, which is why the temple received the name ‘Golden’.
